AGORA: AN ARTS GATHERING

Agora is an idea for the future, it will be a group of arts-related mini get-togethers taking place across multiple neighborhoods in my town.
What sparked my desire to create these experiences is the strong identity that public markets have in Baltimore. All across town, there are markets scattered around several neighborhoods, each one reflecting the richness of that particular neighborhood’s DNA regarding the items/services you can find at that market and the social demographics that tend to frequent that market, all the while the markets exist under one network and system (the oldest continuously operating one in the United States), which allows each market to receive a high level of attention regarding maintenance and operations and connection to the community. This network reminds me of the agora town squares found throughout ancient Greece that were famous for being public gathering places that served all kinds of purposes (arts, trade, and civic organizing, philosophy, etc.). Inspired by Baltimore and ancient Greece, I wanted to create a free and arts-specific network that would be a hybrid between a festival and community gathering.
Agora also somewhat has a similar spelling and sound to agorɔ (pronounced ah-GROH), a word from the Twi language of Ghana. Agorɔ means ‘to play’ or ‘entertainment’, therefore I hope for my Agoras to serve the public as physical spaces for gathering AND as experiences that embody the very act and spirit of play.
